Summary

From the very beginning I knew this book was not for me。 I knew I would not be reading the other two in the series。 I guess I should have stopped reading it early on but I hate to leave a book unfinished once I start。 At first I thought it will be getting three stars - not for me but not really bad。 Father into the book I decided two stars would be more accurate。 Now I've finished it and being in any way, shape or form honest with myself, I hated it, I REALLY hated it! It's not the worst book I've ever read。 All in all it is not that bad at all, I've read much, much worse books in my life。 Some of them I liked much better though。 Therefore if you like the tone when you start reading go ahead and ignore my review completely, you might just love it, but if you have a problem with it from the start, trust me it will only get worse as you go。 。。。more

The Curse worker series has been one of my favourites for many years。 The story follows the main character, Cassel, a seventeen year old boy from a family full of criminals。 He uses his conning skills to try and fit in to an elite school full of rich kids, while having to deal with his family issues, the guilt of murdering his best friend, the disappointment of not being a curse worker, like everyone else in his family, as well as the unexplainable sleep walking he is suffering from。 Despite how The Curse worker series has been one of my favourites for many years。 The story follows the main character, Cassel, a seventeen year old boy from a family full of criminals。 He uses his conning skills to try and fit in to an elite school full of rich kids, while having to deal with his family issues, the guilt of murdering his best friend, the disappointment of not being a curse worker, like everyone else in his family, as well as the unexplainable sleep walking he is suffering from。 Despite how negative this might sound, he's an extremely smart, funny, and likeable character with a very interesting back story, and a really good heart。 。。。more

Shameless, but make it MagicA family of con artists, all of whom have different magical abilities, all except the main characterAnd yet, he loves the con more than them allThis book is some parts whodunit, some parts Matchstick Men, and all sprinkled with utterly enchantingHonestly, I had trouble taking care of my house/chores until I finished the book

I really enjoyed this one and so excited that it’s a series! Fun, light mystery with great characters。 I loved Holly Black’s Cruel Prince series so had to check this out。 It did not disappoint…on to book 2!

I wanted to love this book but in the end I barely finished it。 Concept of "workers" for magic was interesting and I would have loved to see more of the different types of magic。 The mob-boss angle was fine but I was over the (view spoiler)[conflict between all of the brothers and in-family drama (hide spoiler)] well before the end of the book。 Will not keep reading the series。 I wanted to love this book but in the end I barely finished it。 Concept of "workers" for magic was interesting and I would have loved to see more of the different types of magic。 The mob-boss angle was fine but I was over the (view spoiler)[conflict between all of the brothers and in-family drama (hide spoiler)] well before the end of the book。 Will not keep reading the series。 。。。more

A masterwork of world-building with a rapid-fire urban fantasy plot。 So much fun。 A few too many moving pieces, but hey, who's complaining? A masterwork of world-building with a rapid-fire urban fantasy plot。 So much fun。 A few too many moving pieces, but hey, who's complaining? 。。。more

4/5I didn't expect to like this as much as I did。 I tend to not prefer male protagonists over females, maybe because of the recurrent theme of over-sexualization of females within their content。 I was pleasantly surprised that Cassel was a more mature, thoughtful character who has a great emotional range as well as a humoral one as well。 I actually was enthralled by his narration and have to say, this is one of the better protagonists of Holly Black (although I do love Jude from TCP)。 Other than 4/5I didn't expect to like this as much as I did。 I tend to not prefer male protagonists over females, maybe because of the recurrent theme of over-sexualization of females within their content。 I was pleasantly surprised that Cassel was a more mature, thoughtful character who has a great emotional range as well as a humoral one as well。 I actually was enthralled by his narration and have to say, this is one of the better protagonists of Holly Black (although I do love Jude from TCP)。 Other than the confusing world structure, I really did enjoy this。 I can feel a future canon relationship between Cassel and Lila, however, I don't want that。 I sometimes really like it when the main characters are just friends, despite possible attraction。 The only other thing I didn't really enjoy was how sometimes the writing would describe things in such detail that really didn't matter。 It made me lose focus a little; however, a fine first book to a trilogy! 。。。more

All I can say is, I LOVE HOLLY BLACK。 Such an amazing world-builder!

I definitely enjoyed White Cat。 The world building is quite original, and even if the plot is somehow mostly predictable, the writing is good enough that it's very compelling。 Very good work on the characters too。 I definitely enjoyed White Cat。 The world building is quite original, and even if the plot is somehow mostly predictable, the writing is good enough that it's very compelling。 Very good work on the characters too。 。。。more

I decided to read White Cat because I really liked Holly Black's Folk of the Air series and also the Modern Tales of Faerie as well。 However, I found this book really hard to get into。 I was curious to find out what was going on - cause I was lost from the beginning, so that is what kept me reading。 A lot of things aren't explained and there is no world building。 I understand it's modern because they have cellphones and its in America - but that's about all I know。 Some of the conversations were I decided to read White Cat because I really liked Holly Black's Folk of the Air series and also the Modern Tales of Faerie as well。 However, I found this book really hard to get into。 I was curious to find out what was going on - cause I was lost from the beginning, so that is what kept me reading。 A lot of things aren't explained and there is no world building。 I understand it's modern because they have cellphones and its in America - but that's about all I know。 Some of the conversations were really hard to follow - just wasn't making sense。 Although, I felt that way a lot through out the book。 I was having to re-read sentences and going back and re-reading again to see if I missed something or just to try and understand better。 The story was good - but It I feel it could've been wayy better。 I felt no connection what so ever to any of the characters。 I have a couple of the other books in the series and I am going to try it out to see if it gets better。 。。。more

Can't believe I forgot to review this one。 Especially because it was genuinely a good time full of cons and evil families。 It's a 3。5, but I rounded up cuz I still want to finish the series。 Thoughts Nobody Asked For- Cassel had a memorable and fun voice to read the story through。 Also he's not a generic protagonist cuz he's not that nice and cons people all the time- The cons in the book are clever as fetch, and I have mad respect for that- There was one twist that made me angry, but I can forg Can't believe I forgot to review this one。 Especially because it was genuinely a good time full of cons and evil families。 It's a 3。5, but I rounded up cuz I still want to finish the series。 Thoughts Nobody Asked For- Cassel had a memorable and fun voice to read the story through。 Also he's not a generic protagonist cuz he's not that nice and cons people all the time- The cons in the book are clever as fetch, and I have mad respect for that- There was one twist that made me angry, but I can forgive it cuz it wasn't an unreliable narrator。 He didn't know either, so I'll let it slide- I'm not sure how I feel about Lila 。 。 。 - Can we get more Danica and Sam?
